A cascade over the porch, a pipe that burbles yet stays dry at the foot, grass sprouting along the eaves: all classic Ashtead blockages. We hunt down the jam, dig it out, rod the pipe and prove the water flows before we go.
Routine cleaning keeps gutters in good shape, but sometimes the call comes because something has already gone wrong: a torrent over the porch, a damp stain spreading across a bedroom ceiling, or water bubbling out of a pipe joint. That is where our gutter clearing in Ashtead comes in. Rather than simply emptying loose leaves, we chase down the exact point where water is trapped and remove the obstruction holding everything up.
In this village the culprit is often an outlet bunged with acorns and oak twigs, glued together with silt into something close to a cork. We also deal with gutters so neglected that grass, moss and sycamore seedlings have rooted along the trough, pipes packed solid at the swan neck, and mesh or brush guards that have ended up trapping a layer of muck beneath them. Guards come off, the gutter is cleared and they are clipped back. Loose material goes up our 12-metre vacuum poles, stubborn plugs are prised out by hand from a ladder, and downpipes are rodded from the base until clean water runs through.

Ashtead Common is one of the finest oak woodlands in the south east, with ancient pollards that have stood for centuries. Beautiful as they are, oaks are hard on gutters. Oak foliage is leathery and lingers for ages without breaking down, acorns trundle along the gutter bottom before dropping into the first hole they find, and catkins in late spring form a fine mat that silt binds into a solid mass. Houses on the roads that edge the Common, and those around Woodfield and Craddocks Avenue, often see blockages forming in a single autumn.
Elsewhere it is a different mix. Ashtead Park and the gardens on the rising ground towards the Downs carry horse chestnut, beech, lime and conifers, so conker husks, beech mast and needles all play their part. Big gardens mean big trees, and an overhanging sycamore can fill a gutter with seeds that germinate there the following spring. We regularly lift small saplings out of gutters on garages and garden buildings that nobody has looked at for years.
Then there are the storms. A summer downpour on a large Ashtead roof sends a lot of water into gutters at once, and any partial blockage turns into an overflow in seconds. After gales, twigs and small branches pile into gutters and valleys. We clear blocked gutters and downpipes throughout KT21, from Lower Ashtead and the streets around the station to the larger homes near the park, and into Epsom and Leatherhead.
We work out where the blockage is before anything else, so effort goes into the part that needs it.
Overflow marks, wet brick and your photos tell us whether the plug sits in the trough, the outlet, a hopper or partway down the pipe. We confirm it from the ground before starting.
Compacted debris is broken up and drawn out by vacuum, with hand tools for anything wedged in place. Plants are pulled with their roots and any guards are lifted off and put aside.
Starting at ground level, flexible rods are fed up each affected downpipe and worked through bends and offsets, flushing as we go until water pours out freely at the bottom.
Guards are cleaned and clipped back on, water is sent along every cleared run, and we tell you what caused the blockage and whether anything else needs watching.

A full blockage behaves differently from a gutter that is simply due a clean. Watch out for:
If water backs up from the drain at ground level, the trouble is underground and a drainage specialist is needed, which we will tell you rather than guess.
Clearing jobs vary widely, from a single choked outlet on a bungalow to a tall house with guards on every run. We look at the count of jammed troughs and pipes, how hard the plug has set, any guards to unclip, roof height and room to work round the house. A picture of the spillage plus one of every elevation is normally enough for a firm figure at no charge, sent back that day.
Acorns are round and heavy, so they roll along the trough until they drop into an outlet and wedge there. Leaves and silt then build up behind them. With so many oaks around the Common, it is one of the most common blockages we clear locally.
Usually the pipe is blocked below that point, so water fills up and escapes from the nearest joint. We rod the pipe from the bottom to clear it, and check the joint afterwards in case it needs replacing.
Yes. Mesh, bristle and foam inserts all lift out. Underneath gets vacuumed, the inserts get rinsed, and back in they go. Should they be causing more blockages than they stop, you will get our frank view and can choose for yourself.
Expect a reply with a figure that day, and storm-damaged gutters jump towards the front of our running order whenever space opens up. Sending clear photos of the overflow speeds things up, as we can arrive with the right kit.
Yes. Outbuildings in larger Ashtead gardens are often forgotten and can end up with plants growing in the gutters. We clear them alongside the house or as a separate job.
That falls outside what we do. Our rods and vacuum work on everything above the pipe shoe. Once we have pinned the fault to a pipe beneath the ground, we describe it so a drain firm with cameras and jetters can pick it up.
