Home›Gutter Clearing›Fairmile
When a Fairmile gutter is spilling over a terrace door or a downpipe has fallen silent mid-storm, the cause is usually a felt-like mat of pine needles. We dig it out, unblock the pipe and get the rain running away properly again.
Heathland gutters block in a particular way. Pine needles fall first and weave into a springy mesh; birch seed, oak leaves and dust then lodge in it, and within a year or two the whole thing has rotted into a damp, fibrous plug with grass and seedlings rooting on top. Water slides over it rather than through it. Gutter clearing in Fairmile is about getting rid of that plug completely, including the part jammed down into each outlet and the first bend of the downpipe.
We start with the high-reach vacuum, which on its own shifts most loose material from up to 12 metres away. Where the mat has knitted solid we go up on a secure ladder and tease it out by hand, root balls and all, so nothing sprouts back from what is left. Downpipes are then cleared from the ground upwards with rods and flushed until the water arrives at the gully at full flow. If your gutters have guards that have become a shelf for needles, we lift them, empty the gutter underneath, rinse the guards and clip them back on.

The houses of Fairmile share their plots with a lot of trees. This is heathland country on the edge of Fairmile Common and the wider Esher Commons, and its sandy soil has always favoured Scots pine, birch and holly, with oaks along the older boundaries. Needles from a single big pine can fill a section of gutter in a season, and because they fall all year round there is never a point at which the roof has finished shedding.
The houses themselves make blockages more likely. Plenty of Fairmile homes are large and architecturally ambitious, with multiple hips, valleys running down between roof slopes, parapet or box gutters behind decorative edges, and long eaves on two or three storeys. Water from a big roof area all funnels to a handful of outlets, so a single blocked one can send a torrent over the edge in a summer downpour. Detached garages and coach houses tucked under the trees are often the worst of all, because nobody looks at them until something goes wrong.
Winter storms crossing the open commons bring down dead needles and twigs in bulk, so we often hear from Fairmile homeowners in the days after a blustery night. We clear blocked gutters across the area, from the private roads off Fairmile Lane to the homes along the Portsmouth Road between Cobham and Esher, and throughout the surrounding KT11 postcode.
We trace the water from the roof edge to the drain and clear every obstacle in between.
Your photos, and a walk round on arrival, show us where water is escaping and which outlets or downpipes have stopped. On large roofs we prioritise the ones causing visible damage.
Loose needles and leaves are vacuumed away, then compacted mats and rooted plants are worked free by hand from a ladder, right down into the outlet itself.
Blocked downpipes are cleared from the bottom up and flushed through, so water moves from gutter to gully without backing up into the run above.
Any guards are refitted, debris is cleared from terraces and gravel, and we tell you what we found – including any sections that would benefit from repair.

Clearing is needed when gutters have gone beyond a routine clean. Book in if you see:
Clearing overflow quickly protects render, brickwork and timber from long-term water damage.
We price each clearance on the work involved, with no surprises on the day. On a Fairmile clearance, the figure hinges on:
Send pictures of each side of the property and any problem areas, and we will reply with a fixed price as quickly as we can, often the same day.
Needles interlock as they fall, forming a mat that catches dust, seeds and leaves. It holds water like a sponge and quickly becomes compost for weeds. Unlike flat leaves, they also slide into outlets and bind together inside the downpipe, which is why Fairmile homes near pines need more thorough clearing.
Only partly. Many guards let needles slip through or let them build up on top, where they form a layer that water runs straight over. We remove the guards, clear the gutter beneath, rinse the guards and refit them, so they work as well as they can.
Yes, where we can get safe access. Box and parapet gutters are found on some of the larger Fairmile properties and need regular clearing because a blocked one can send water directly into the building. We clear them by hand and check the outlet is running freely.
Probably not. If the downpipe itself runs freely after we have cleared it but water still backs up at the gully, the blockage is likely in the underground drain. That needs a drainage company with jetting equipment, and we will let you know what we have found.
We try to prioritise active overflow, especially where water is coming inside. Send photos by WhatsApp so we can see what is happening and you will hear back with the earliest slot we can offer, which weather and existing bookings permitting is often only days away.
Yes. Outbuildings tucked under the trees often have the worst blockages because they get forgotten. Include them in your photos and we will clear them on the same visit as the main house.
