Water pouring over the gutter, a downpipe that never runs, weeds waving from the eaves – these are blockage problems, and they need more than a quick scoop. We dig out the obstruction, free the pipes and get rainwater flowing again.
A gutter can go from slightly full to completely blocked in a single autumn. One clump of wet leaves lodges at an outlet, silt builds up behind it, and within weeks the run is holding a trough of murky water. Add a summer of warm weather and something will start growing in it. Our gutter clearing in Jacob’s Well is for exactly these situations, where rainwater is no longer finding its way into the downpipe and is instead spilling down walls, over doorways and onto paths.
Clearing a proper blockage takes patience. Packed material is broken up and lifted out rather than pushed further along, plants are removed along with their roots, and outlets are opened up until water drops through cleanly. We then rod and flush each downpipe from the ground upwards, paying close attention to the swan-neck bends tucked under the eaves, which is where many blockages hide. Gutter guards that have become buried under debris are taken off, the gutter underneath is cleared and they are put back. Before and after photos are available so you can see what was causing the problem.

Jacob’s Well is caught between two very different landscapes, and both feed debris into its gutters. On one side is Whitmoor Common, with Scots pine and birch whose needles and catkins slip easily into gutter outlets and knit together into a tight mat. On the other side are the river meadows of the Wey Navigation, where willows and poplars release clouds of cottony seed in early summer and drop long, narrow leaves in autumn. Those fine seeds behave almost like felt once they get wet, sealing over outlets and gutter guards.
Many homes along the A320 Woking Road and the roads branching off it have bay windows, porches and single-storey extensions with their own short runs of gutter. Those short runs tend to have a single outlet, so one clump of debris is enough to block the whole thing and send water straight down the front of the porch. Bungalows, with their long low gutters, can collect enough leaf litter from neighbouring trees to sprout grass and seedlings within a couple of years.
Low-lying ground near the meadows also means moss grows readily on roofs, and moss pieces that wash into the gutter are heavy and slow to shift. Water tipping over the gutter lip, or a pipe that stays bone dry in a downpour, tells you a clearance is needed. Our clearance work spans the village and its GU4 neighbours, Sutton Green and Burpham included.
Each stage targets a different part of the system, so the blockage is fully cleared rather than just moved along.
Using your photos and a walk-round on the day, we locate where water is backing up – a choked outlet, a waterlogged length, a packed swan neck or a downpipe blocked solid.
Hardened sludge is loosened, lifted and vacuumed, and any plants are eased out with their roots so they cannot regrow from the remains left in the gutter.
From the ground, each pipe and its top bends are rodded and flushed until water runs through freely. If the obstruction lies in the drain below ground, we tell you straight away.
Guards are refitted, water is poured along every cleared run to show it draining, paths are swept and you get photos of what was removed.

A gutter that is merely full and one that has stopped draining altogether are two separate problems. These signs point to a blockage that needs clearing:
The sooner a blockage is cleared, the less strain it puts on brackets and joints.
Left in place over winter, a blocked run can freeze, split and pull its brackets loose.
Clearances are quoted on the effort involved, which varies widely from house to house. A clearance quote in GU4 depends on:
A couple of photos of the problem area are usually enough for us to give a firm price.
Yes, it is a common problem near the Wey meadows. Willow and poplar seed drifts across the village in early summer, then turns into a felt-like layer over outlets and gutter guards once it gets wet. A clearance after the seeding season, as well as the usual autumn visit, solves it for most homes.
Yes. Short gutters over porches, bays and extensions usually have only one outlet, so they block easily. We clear them from the ground with the pole system, which means nobody needs to climb onto or lean against the porch roof.
That nearly always means the blockage is above it, at the outlet or in the swan neck bends just below the gutter. We clear the outlet, rod the bends and flush the pipe from the ground upwards. If the pipe then backs up from below, the problem is in the underground drain, which needs a drainage company.
We do. Grass, moss and seedlings are lifted out with their roots after the soil-like debris around them has been loosened, so the gutter is not strained or pulled. Leaving roots behind just lets them grow back, so we take care to remove them fully.
They help with larger leaves but tend to struggle with pine needles and the fine seed from riverside trees, which settle on top or slip underneath. We regularly lift guards off, clear the gutter beneath and refit them, including aluminium systems as well as plastic mesh.
The moment you spot water spilling, take a picture and message it; quotes for clearances normally go back out within the day. We book clearances in as soon as possible, giving priority to gutters that are pouring water against walls, doorways or windows.
