A drip landing on the doorstep, a bracket hanging loose, a length of gutter tilting the wrong way – small faults that soak walls if ignored. We repair them with new fittings carried on the van, usually in a single visit.
Guttering is a chain of short lengths held together by joints and clips, so it only takes one weak link to let water out in the wrong place. Rubber seals inside union joints perish, end caps shrink and pop loose, brackets crack in the cold, and downpipe clips rust or snap off. Our gutter repairs in Jacob’s Well track down that weak link and replace it, so rainwater is carried round the house and down the pipe rather than across your brickwork.
We do not believe in bodging a leak with a blob of silicone. Instead, a failed union is taken out and a new one fitted with fresh seals; tired brackets are swapped and re-spaced; a length that has dropped is re-hung so it slopes gently towards its outlet; and cracked gutter, split end caps, worn outlets and broken downpipe sections are replaced outright. Stock for the usual faults rides around with us, so it is rare for a repair to need a second trip. Plenty of repairs are spotted while we are already clearing gutters, and we always share photos and agree a price with you before going ahead.

Much of the housing in Jacob’s Well dates from the middle decades of the last century, with semis, terraces and bungalows lining the A320 Woking Road and the roads leading off it, alongside a handful of older cottages and some more recent infill homes. A lot of that guttering is the first generation of plastic fitted when cast iron went out of fashion, or replacement plastic that is now itself decades old. After years of sunshine, frost and wet leaves, the material becomes brittle, the seals harden and brackets lose their grip.
Debris load is the other big factor. Pine needles and birch leaves from Whitmoor Common on one side of the village, and willow and poplar litter from the Wey meadows on the other, regularly fill gutters with heavy, waterlogged material. A gutter that sits full of wet debris for a whole winter puts constant strain on its brackets, and eventually the run drops at the middle or pulls away at one end. Once the fall is lost, water pools at low points and starts to escape through the nearest joint.
Bungalows are particularly prone to long sagging runs, and semis often have a mix of systems where a neighbour’s gutter meets yours at the party wall, a classic spot for leaks. We repair all of these throughout Jacob’s Well and GU4, including Burpham, Merrow and the Guildford side of the village. If a system is too far gone to justify repairs, we will say so plainly.
Good repairs depend on seeing the fault clearly, which is why every job starts with a clean section of gutter.
Send a picture of the leak, sag or broken part from the ground – a shot taken while it is raining is ideal. We can usually identify what has failed and quote for it the same day.
We empty the run around the fault so joints, brackets and outlets can be inspected properly. Fitting new parts into a gutter full of sludge only leads to more leaks.
Perished unions, cracked lengths, split end caps or weak brackets are replaced with new fittings, and any dropped section is re-hung to fall towards the outlet again.
We pour water through the repaired area, check every joint stays dry and the downpipe drains, then tidy up and send you photos of the completed repair.

Most gutter repairs fall into a handful of familiar categories. These are the ones we deal with most frequently in the village:
Where we find the fascia behind the gutter is soft, we will show you, as it affects how securely new brackets can be fixed.
Most of these can be sorted in under an hour.
One leaking union and four metres of re-hung gutter are very different jobs, so there is no set tariff. Our price for the fix will hinge on:
Photos usually let us quote in advance. If anything extra turns up on the day, we will discuss it with you before carrying on.
That party-wall joint is probably the single most frequent repair we make on the village’s semis and terraces. The two systems often differ slightly, or one side has been replaced and the other has not. We fit a new union or a suitable adaptor so the connection is properly sealed, without needing to replace either side’s whole gutter.
Not usually. Sagging is normally down to brackets that have cracked or spread under the weight of wet debris. We clear the run, put up fresh brackets closer together and bring the slope back round to the outlet. Replacement is only worth considering if the gutter itself is brittle or badly cracked.
A joint that has failed usually has a perished seal or a distorted fitting, and silicone smeared over the top does not bond well to old, damp plastic. Fitting a new union gives a proper seal that copes with expansion and contraction, so it keeps working through many winters.
Some cast-iron problems can be repaired, and a few older cottages around Jacob’s Well still have it. However, cast iron that is badly rusted or cracked is often better replaced. We will look at its condition and give you an honest view of whether a repair is sensible.
Very likely, because the vans hold the bits most houses call for, including unions, brackets, end caps, outlets, downpipe sections and clips, in the common colours. If your system uses an unusual profile, we may need to order parts and come back.
Yes, and it is often the most efficient way. A gutter clogged with leaves can hide a split joint for months; empty it, and the drip shows up straight away. With your approval, we can fix them on the same visit, saving you a second call-out.
