A long sweep of block paving up to the front door, a wide terrace stepping down to the lawn, a pool surround, some decking under the birches: Fairmile gardens tend to have a lot of hard surface, and every square metre of it sits beneath trees. Needles and leaves leave brown tannin marks, shade lets algae spread into a slick green skin, and moss and weeds root in every joint. Brute force ruins paving; judgement is what cleans it.
