Rain sheeting over the edge, a downpipe that never gurgles or weeds sprouting along the eaves? We dig out the stubborn blockages in Woking gutters and downpipes so water can drain away once more.
A gutter that has stopped working needs more than a routine tidy. By the time water is pouring over the front lip, whatever is inside has usually set into a heavy, sodden plug – often sitting right on top of the outlet – and there may be grass, moss or even a sapling rooted in it. Our gutter clearing Woking callouts are built around that situation: track down the blockage, break it apart and get the rainwater flowing to the drain again.
We begin wherever the overflow is worst, since the spill point nearly always reveals where the plug is hiding. Compacted silt and needles are prised loose and sucked out with our high-reach vacuum, while anything that has taken root is pulled out by hand from a ladder. If guards or mesh have trapped the mess underneath, we lift them off, clear the channel below and fit them back. Next the downpipe is worked from the bottom upwards until it runs freely. You end up with gutters that can swallow the next cloudburst instead of tipping it down your walls.

Autumn hits Woking hard. The town is wrapped in heath and woodland, and gardens backing onto the Basingstoke Canal towpath, Woking Park or the commons near Sheerwater and Horsell collect a heavy drop of oak and birch leaves in October and November. When those leaves land on top of a layer of pine needles that never got cleared, they pack down into something closer to compost than debris – and that is what we spend most of our winter breaking up.
Wind plays its part as well. Westerly gales sweep across the open ground around Hook Heath and the golf courses, stripping twigs that jam crossways over outlets and act like a dam. Older homes in Maybury, Westfield and Old Woking often still have narrow outlets and small-bore downpipes, which choke far more easily than modern deep-flow systems. Bungalows and chalet-style houses in Mayford and Kingfield, with their low gutters, attract birds that add nesting material to the mix.
Shared gutter runs on terraces are another Woking issue: one house with a choked outlet can cause water to back up and spill over outside the neighbour’s front door. Flat-fronted Victorian rows are the usual culprits, because a single run may serve three or four homes. We clear across GU21 and GU22, including St John’s, Goldsworth Park, Knaphill, Sheerwater, Old Woking and the streets around the station.
Shifting a stubborn blockage calls for a more targeted approach than a planned yearly clean.
Send pictures showing where water pours over or stains the brickwork, along with the rest of the guttering. Knowing the trouble spots helps us bring the right kit and fix a price.
We trace the overflow back to its source – usually a packed outlet, a dam of twigs or a sagging dip where silt has settled – and check whether guards need removing first.
Hardened debris is broken up and vacuumed away, plants are pulled by hand and guards are refitted after clearing beneath. Every connected run is emptied, not only the obvious stretch.
Working from ground level up, we free the downpipe and run water through to show it drains. If the hold-up is in the underground drain, we explain what we found.

A dirty gutter can wait a few weeks; a blocked one is already letting water go where it should not. These are the signs that tell the two apart:
Spot two or more of these and it is worth acting soon, because standing water in a gutter adds weight, loosens brackets and soaks the fascia behind it. Clearing the blockage now is almost always cheaper than repairing the damage it causes later.
Clearance quotes depend on what is actually lodged in the gutters and how awkward they are to get at. We take into account:
A few photos – especially of the spot where it overflows – are normally enough for us to give you a firm figure, usually the same day you send them.
Cleaning is planned upkeep for gutters that are still doing their job. Clearing is for gutters that have already given up: overflowing, holding standing water, sprouting weeds or feeding a blocked downpipe. The equipment overlaps, but clearing means hunting down the blockage, breaking it out and proving the downpipe drains afterwards.
We can, but water does not respect boundaries. If the blockage is on your neighbour’s side, clearing yours alone will not stop the overflow. Many Woking customers ask neighbours to book at the same time so the whole shared run is cleared in one visit, which also saves arranging access twice.
Yes. Guards keep leaves out, but fine silt and needles slip through and settle beneath. We lift them, clear the gutter underneath and put them back carefully. We have done this on a home with aluminium guards that had to be removed and refitted exactly as they were.
It could be either. After strong winds we often find twigs wedged across an outlet. Sometimes a bracket has also given way and the gutter has lost its fall. We clear the blockage first, then let you know if anything looks bent, loose or leaking.
Yes, and nobody puts a ladder on the conservatory roof to do it. Gutters over conservatories, garages and single-storey extensions are reached from the ground with our poles. These lower gutters catch everything that washes off the main roof, so they block surprisingly quickly.
Regularly. Homes beside the Basingstoke Canal and on the edge of the common get a heavy mix of leaves and needles, so blockages are common. We cover the whole of Woking, including Horsell, St John’s, Knaphill and Sheerwater, and quote from your photos, usually on the same day.
