Water cascading over the edge, a downpipe that gurgles and backs up, a fringe of weeds along the eaves? We dig out stubborn plugs of debris on Sheerwater homes and get rainwater moving again, without anyone climbing onto your roof.
A gutter that has stopped working needs a different approach from a routine tidy. Once rain is visibly sheeting over the lip, the debris inside has usually compacted into something closer to wet turf than loose leaves, and it often has roots running through it. Our gutter clearing visits in Sheerwater are aimed at exactly that situation: breaking up the blockage, lifting it out and proving that the outlet and downpipe can cope with a downpour again.
We start with a powerful commercial vacuum on poles reaching 12 metres, which pulls out loose material quickly. Where the build-up is set hard or has turned into a mini garden, we go up on a safely footed ladder and remove it by hand, cutting out roots and scraping the outlet clear. Downpipes are tackled from the bottom upwards, rodding and flushing until the water runs straight through. Any guards or mesh on a Sheerwater roof are unclipped, the trough beneath emptied, and the guards seated back where they belong.

Much of Sheerwater was built in a single phase after the war, and those homes have now had seventy-odd winters of leaves, moss and dust landing on them. Many of the concrete-tiled roofs carry a fair amount of moss, and when it dries in summer it breaks into small clumps that roll down into the gutter. Add a few autumn leaves and the rain turns it into a dense paste that sets around the outlet. Once that plug forms, the gutter fills from one end and spills over the lowest point, often right above a front door or a back step.
The canal is the other factor. The Basingstoke Canal forms a green corridor along the south of the estate, and the trees on its banks scatter willow leaves, alder cones and birch seed across nearby roofs. Seeds lodge in the silt, and by spring there can be grass and even small sapling shoots growing in the gutters. We pull those out by the roots rather than snapping them off, so they do not regrow from the stump.
Construction work from the regeneration has also put more dust and grit in the air on some roads in recent years, and that settles in gutters as a heavy sediment. Wherever you are in GU21, from the streets off Albert Drive to the edges of Maybury and Woodham, we can usually get your water flowing freely within a single visit.
Clearing a stubborn blockage is about working in the right order, from the top of the system down to the drain.
Your pictures plus a quick look on the day show us exactly where water escapes and which outlet or downpipe is choked, so effort goes straight to the problem area.
Loose debris is vacuumed away first. Compacted sludge, roots and weeds are then broken up and removed by hand from a ladder, along with anything wedged inside the outlet.
We work up each downpipe from the ground, rodding out lodged clumps and flushing through until water drains quickly. Swan-neck bends get particular attention, as they snag debris most.
A final run of water along the gutter confirms everything drains properly. Guards are refitted, mess is cleared away and you get photos if you were out.

Most clearing jobs on the estate start with one of these problems. If any sound familiar, the gutter is probably not coping:
After a big autumn storm these issues can appear almost overnight, so it is worth a quick look from the garden once the wind dies down.
The cost of clearing depends on how much needs to come out and how hard it is to reach. We look at:
WhatsApp us your address and some pictures of the overflowing section, and we will send a clear price before any work is booked.
Messages usually get an answer within the day, weekends and evenings too, and a spilling gutter is slotted into the earliest gap we have. A picture of the spilling stretch lets us load the right tools and agree the cost before we pull up in Sheerwater.
Yes. Grass, weeds and small saplings are common on Sheerwater roofs near the canal. We pull them out with their roots and scrape out the soil they have grown in, which stops them coming straight back and prevents the roots cracking the gutter.
Our rods and flushing tackle the pipe from the bottom up, swan-neck bends included. Should water still sit at the base after that, the culprit is the pipework under your path, which calls for a drain-jetting specialist, and we will say so honestly.
We do. Guards and mesh often trap a layer of leaves on top and silt underneath. We lift them off carefully, clear the gutter beneath, rinse the guards and clip them back in place. Rigid metal guards and roll-out plastic mesh are both familiar to us.
The yearly clean keeps a working system ticking over, whereas clearing is the rescue call once a gutter has already choked, which usually means more hand work, rodding downpipes and removing compacted or rooted debris. Many Sheerwater customers book clearing first, then switch to a yearly clean.
Yes. Our vacuum poles reach about 12 metres, which covers the taller houses and low-rise flats built in the Sheerwater regeneration. For hand-clearing at that height we use ladders only where they can be footed and positioned safely.
