The best time to clean gutters is late autumn, once most of the leaves have come down but before the heaviest winter rain. A second, lighter clean in spring is worth it if you have trees nearby. Here is how the seasons compare, and how to choose the right moment for your own home.
Why late autumn wins
Deciduous trees drop most of their leaves between October and early December, and a gutter cleaned in September can be full again by Bonfire Night. Waiting until the leaf fall has largely finished means the clean lasts through the wettest, stormiest months, when blocked gutters do the most harm.
That does not mean you should wait until the last leaf has dropped. Oaks and beeches hold their leaves late, so in a street full of mature trees the best time to clean gutters may stretch into early December. If you are unsure, look at the trees: when they are mostly bare, it is time.
Season by season
Each season brings its own debris, and that decides whether a clean is worthwhile. The table below sums up what to expect, and the notes underneath add some detail for each one.
| Season | What lands in your gutters | Worth cleaning? |
|---|---|---|
| Early autumn (Sept) | Early leaf drop, seeds, twigs | Only if already blocked |
| Late autumn (Nov to early Dec) | Bulk of the leaf fall | Yes: the most important clean |
| Winter | Wet debris, ice, storm litter | After a bad storm or if overflowing |
| Spring | Blossom, seeds, winter debris, moss | Yes, if trees are close |
| Summer | Little debris, nests, plant growth | A quick check, clear only if needed |
Spring: a useful second clean
Spring is the second-best slot. Blossom, helicopter seeds and the sludge left over from winter can clog the channel just as the weather starts to turn showery. It is also a good time to look for winter damage, such as loosened brackets, cracked joints or sagging sections.
Summer: check, do not assume
Summer is usually quiet, but gutters are not always clear. Birds nest in them, seeds germinate in old sludge and weeds can take root. A summer thunderstorm can also expose a blockage you did not know about. A quick look from the ground is enough to decide whether anything is needed.
Winter: only when necessary
Cleaning in winter is possible in dry, calm weather, but frost, ice and strong wind make it riskier and sometimes impossible. If gutters overflow in mid-winter, do not climb up and fix it yourself. Ice makes ladders slippery and can hide how weak a gutter has become. Our article on frozen gutters and damage explains what to watch for.
Work out your own best time to clean gutters
The calendar is only a guide. A more reliable method is to ask what your trees and roof are doing:
- Mostly deciduous trees nearby: clean in late autumn, with a spring check.
- Conifers or evergreens: needles fall all year, so aim for twice a year, spring and autumn.
- No trees, newer roof: once a year in autumn is usually enough.
- Mossy roof: clean after any roof treatment, because moss comes down into the gutters.
- Moving house or selling: clean before the survey or viewing; see gutter cleaning before selling your home.

After storms and strong winds
There is one more thing to remember: the best time to clean gutters is also the moment you notice a problem. A blocked gutter in a storm does more harm in a week than a tidy one does in a year, so do not hold out for the perfect month if water is already coming over the edge.
Whatever the season, heavy storms can strip twigs, leaves and even roof moss into the gutters in one night. If you notice overflow after a storm, or the downpipe is not running, treat that as a trigger for a clean regardless of the date. Check too for slipped sections or loose brackets, and see storm damage to gutters for what to look for.
Book early for the busy weeks
Demand for the best time to clean gutters is the same for every homeowner in the area, so the last weeks of November fill up quickly.
Everyone wants their gutters done at the same time, usually in the last weeks of autumn. If you want a particular week, book a little early. It is perfectly sensible to arrange the visit in October for a date in November, so you are not left waiting while the gutters overflow. We can also make a note to remind you the following year.
As for cleaning them yourself, ladders are the main danger. Work above a single storey is best left to professionals, and gutters over conservatories or extensions cannot be safely reached by ladder at all.

Frequently asked questions
What month is best to clean gutters?
For most homes, November is the best month, with early December a good alternative in areas with late-dropping oak and beech. By then most leaves are down, and the clean protects the gutters through the wettest months. If you have trees nearby, plan a lighter second clean in April or May.
Is it better to clean gutters in spring or autumn?
Autumn is more important, because it clears leaves before winter rain and storms. Spring is a good follow-up, removing blossom, seeds and winter sludge. If you can only afford one visit, pick late autumn. If you have heavy tree cover, do both.
Can you clean gutters in winter?
Yes, on dry, calm days without frost. Cold, wet and icy weather makes access unsafe, and a visit may need rearranging. If gutters overflow in winter, a professional can clear them from the ground with a pole system, which avoids the slip risk of ladders.
Should I clean gutters before or after the leaves fall?
After. Cleaning too early means they fill again before the trees are bare. Wait until most of the leaves are down, then clean. If a blockage is causing overflow earlier, clear it as a stopgap and plan the full clean for late autumn.
