Home›Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal›Knaphill
Thick cushions of moss, patches of lichen and dark algae can age a roof quickly. We remove them carefully, using a method matched to your tiles, and finish by clearing the gutters so nothing is left behind.
A soft green carpet of moss may look innocent, yet it soaks up water like a bath sponge. It holds rainwater against the tiles, lifts their edges as it grows underneath, and in a frost that trapped moisture can crack concrete and clay alike. Our roof cleaning in Knaphill starts with moss removal by hand, using specialist made-to-measure tile scrapers shaped to fit your particular tile profile. That lets us clear moss from the surface and the gaps between tiles without levering or breaking them.
Once the bulk of the growth has gone, the roof is cleaned using whichever method suits the tiles best. That might be a low-pressure wash, or roof steam cleaning, which uses heat rather than force and is kinder to older or more delicate coverings. We can then apply an optional biocide treatment that continues working after we leave, killing spores and slowing the return of moss, algae and lichen. Because a lot of debris inevitably ends up in the gutters, they are cleared at the end of every job. The result is a roof that sheds water properly and looks years younger.

Knaphill is surrounded by woodland and heath, and that combination is ideal for moss. Tall pines, oaks and birches shade roofs for much of the day, and the roof slopes facing north or towards trees barely dry out between October and April. Fallen needles and leaves lodge in the gaps between tiles and give moss spores a ready-made seed bed. It is common to see one slope of a house almost clean and the other carpeted.
Tile choice changes the approach as well. Many of the 1950s to 1970s homes around the village have concrete interlocking tiles with a rough surface that moss grips easily, while older cottages and Victorian houses often have clay plain tiles that are more fragile and need a gentler approach. Newer properties, including those on the former Brookwood Hospital estate, generally have smoother modern tiles but steep slopes and dormers where moss gathers in valleys and around roof windows. Choosing between scraping, low-pressure washing and steam cleaning depends on which of these we are working on.
Damp air also has its say. The Basingstoke Canal runs along the southern edge of the village, and mist that settles over the water and surrounding trees on still mornings keeps north-facing slopes wet. Lichen, which looks like small grey or yellow discs, is common on roofs near open heathland around Bisley and Horsell Common too. We carry out moss removal and roof cleaning throughout GU21, including Knaphill, St John’s and Goldsworth Park.
Each roof is treated according to its tiles, its pitch and how much growth it carries.
We look at the tile type, its condition and the depth of moss from your photos and on site, then recommend scraping, low-pressure washing, steam cleaning or a combination of them.
Specialist tile scrapers, made to fit the profile of your tiles, lift moss off the surface and out of the joints without levering the tiles or forcing water underneath.
Remaining algae and dirt are removed with low-pressure washing or roof steam cleaning, chosen to suit the tiles so older or softer coverings are not damaged.
An optional biocide is applied to slow regrowth, and every gutter is then emptied of the moss and grit washed down, so your drainage works properly after the clean.

A little surface algae is not urgent, but some signs mean moss is starting to cause problems. Consider booking a roof clean if you notice:
Early autumn and spring are good times to tackle it, before the wettest months set in. Leaving thick moss through a cold winter gives frost more chance to damage tiles that are already holding water, and that kind of damage is far harder to put right.
Roofs vary enormously, so every price is worked out for the individual property. The factors we consider are:

Done properly, it should not. We remove moss by hand with scrapers made to fit your tile profile, which avoids levering tiles up or blasting water under them. Where tiles are older or fragile, we use gentler methods such as steam cleaning instead of washing.
No. High pressure can strip the surface from tiles and drive water beneath them. We use low-pressure washing or roof steam cleaning, depending on what the tiles can safely take, after the bulk of the moss has been scraped off by hand.
The side facing north or overhung by pines and oaks gets little sun and stays damp, while the sunny side dries out quickly. With so much mature tree cover around Knaphill, it is common for one slope to be heavily mossed while the other is fairly clear.
It keeps working for some time after it is applied, killing remaining spores and slowing regrowth of moss, algae and lichen. How long a roof stays clear depends on shade and tree cover, but treated roofs generally stay cleaner for considerably longer than untreated ones.
Yes. Clay plain tiles on older cottages need a gentle touch, so we rely on careful hand scraping and, where appropriate, steam cleaning rather than washing. We will look closely at the condition of the tiles first and point out any that are already cracked or slipped.
Some of it inevitably does, which is why clearing the gutters is part of every roof clean we carry out. Once the roof is finished, the gutters are emptied and the downpipes checked so moss and grit do not cause a blockage later.
