Home›Gutter, Fascia & Soffit Cleaning›St John’s
That grubby band beneath the roof tiles makes a whole house look neglected. In St John’s we wash the outside of gutters, fascia boards and soffits using a mild detergent and feather-light bristles, so the uPVC regains an even, crisp shade.
Fresh paint on the front door and a well-kept hedge can only do so much if the eaves above are smeared with green and grey. Our fascia and soffit cleaning St John’s service targets that neglected zone, washing the visible outer skin of each gutter, the board it hangs on and the horizontal panel tucked beneath. It will not change how the gutter drains, but it changes how the house looks from across the road, and buyers, neighbours and you yourself notice the difference immediately.
Nothing about it is aggressive. A diluted cleaning agent made for plastics softens the algae and the oily film that settles from passing traffic, and we then work along each length with soft-bristled brushes mounted on long carbon handles, finishing with a thorough fresh-water rinse. For a standard two-storey house, nothing touches the walls but brush heads, as everything is reached from the garden path. Booking a gutter clear-out alongside is common sense here, and with good reason: overflow is what causes many of the streaks in the first place.

St John’s has two things that rooflines dislike: plenty of shade and plenty of moisture. Oaks and birches overhang gardens around St John’s Lye, the pines on the rising ground towards Hook Heath keep north-facing walls in shadow for much of the year, and the Basingstoke Canal adds a humid microclimate along the roads nearest the water. On those damp, sunless elevations, green algae takes hold on uPVC quickly and spreads from the bottom of the gutter upwards.
Tiger stripes are the other common complaint. Those dark streaks running down the face of a gutter form wherever rainwater has spilled over the edge, carrying grime from the roof and the air. Houses facing busier routes through the village and into Woking pick up more traffic film, and any gutter that regularly overflows because of blocked outlets will be heavily striped. Normal household cleaners barely touch them; they need a suitable solution and patient brushing.
Variety is the rule in St John’s. Victorian cottages near the church and canal may have painted timber fascias alongside newer plastic, the semis and estate homes towards Goldsworth Park mostly have white uPVC that shows every mark, and the large detached houses on the hill often have extensive soffits and decorative gable boards. We wash rooflines throughout GU21 in St John’s, taking care around hanging baskets, climbing roses, conservatory roofs and alarm boxes.
The method is simple but careful, and each wash goes through the same four stages.
Each gutter, board and panel is checked for splits, loose sections or peeling paint, and we confirm with you which sides, bay roofs and garages are part of the job.
A weak, plastic-friendly detergent is laid along the eaves and left for a few minutes, giving it time to loosen green growth, road film and dark streaks.
Bristle heads on telescopic carbon handles pass over every surface, doubling back over tiger stripes, shaded corners and the gutter undersides where dirt clings longest.
Plenty of fresh water carries away every bit of detergent, drips on the windows beneath are wiped dry, and we either show you the result or send pictures.

Plastic rooflines rarely look dirty overnight; the grime builds slowly until one day the house simply looks tired. These are the signs that a wash would make a real difference:
A roofline wash is also worth booking before selling or letting a property, or once builders have finished and left a film of dust along the eaves, because a bright roofline lifts kerb appeal with barely any upheaval.
Each property gets its own quote, shaped mostly by:
Photograph each elevation and send the images across on WhatsApp, as a text or attached to an email. In most cases that is all we need to confirm a firm figure within the same day, evenings and weekends included.
Yes, in the great majority of cases. They are stubborn because the grime bonds to the plastic, but the right cleaning solution and careful brushing remove them. On very old, sun-faded uPVC a faint shadow can survive, and if that seems likely on your gutters we will warn you before starting.
North-facing walls get little or no direct sun, especially under the oaks and pines common around the village, so they stay damp for longer after rain. That is ideal for algae. Sunnier elevations dry out faster, so growth there is slower and lighter.
No. Forceful water can be driven behind soffit panels, dull the finish on the plastic and weaken window seals. A soft-touch detergent and brush routine, finished with a light rinse, is kinder to your roofline and every bit as effective, which is why we never use high pressure on eaves.
We can, but we check them first. Sound paintwork washes well, while flaking or blistered paint may lift when brushed. We will tell you what we find before starting, and if the timber needs repainting or repair we will point that out.
We would recommend it. Blocked, overflowing channels will quickly paint new streaks down the plastic you have just had washed. Doing the inside and the outside together removes the cause and the symptom in one go, and spares you organising a second appointment later in the year.
Most semi-detached and detached homes in St John’s take a few hours, depending on the length of roofline and how heavy the algae is. Larger houses with extensive soffits or several gables may take most of a day, and we will give you a realistic idea when we quote.
