Ridge-top gales and woodland debris can dam a gutter overnight. When water is sheeting down your walls, we track down the blockage, prise out the packed material and get downpipes running again from the bottom up.
When a gutter overflows, the cause is nearly always a single choke point rather than a general build-up. On a woodland plot it might be a wedge of beech husks jammed in an outlet, a mat of holly leaves at a corner, or a downpipe stuffed with twigs after a stormy night over Leith Hill. Our gutter clearing Abinger Common visits find that obstruction, remove it completely and then empty the rest of the run so the problem does not simply return with the next downpour.
Soggy, compressed debris comes out with our industrial vacuum, which reaches up to 12 metres on extendable poles. Material that has hardened or sprouted gets loosened with a trowel and lifted out by hand at the ladder top. Downpipes are cleared starting at the shoe and working upwards, flushing until water emerges cleanly. Gutter guards and brushes are taken out, the silt trapped beneath them is cleared, and they are refitted. Should water still back up below ground afterwards, we will explain that the issue lies in the drain, which needs a drainage engineer.

Abinger Common is set on high, wooded ground in the Surrey Hills, with Leith Hill to the south and Wotton and Friday Street close by. The trees here are not just in gardens; they surround whole properties and overhang drives and roofs. When a strong wind blows across the ridge, a single night can drop twigs, cones, beech mast and handfuls of leaves into every gutter on a house, and those materials lock together far more firmly than the soft leaves of a suburban street.
Wet conditions finish the job. The village gets more rain and mist than lower-lying towns, and debris rarely has the chance to dry out. It slumps into a heavy, dark layer that soon supports grass, moss, ferns and tree seedlings. Their roots grip joints and outlets, which is why gutters here often need roots pulled rather than just leaves scooped. Wall-mounted hoppers on older houses add another trap, collecting leaves until they overflow down the brickwork.
Many local homes are large tile-hung or Arts and Crafts houses, often with barns, stables or garages alongside, and plenty have long gutter runs feeding a small number of downpipes. One blocked outlet can therefore send a lot of water over the edge. We clear gutters and downpipes across RH5, from the cottages near the green and St James’s Church to properties out towards Holmbury St Mary and Abinger Hammer.
Find the jam, shift it, then prove the water runs where it should.
Your photos and an on-site look show us where water is escaping, which outlet or hopper is jammed and whether the downpipe below is part of the problem.
Packed husks, leaves and silt are vacuumed out, with hand clearing from a ladder for rooted plants and material set hard around outlets and corners.
Starting at ground level, each affected downpipe is rodded and flushed upwards, and bends, hoppers and swan-necks are checked for trapped debris.
We run water along the gutter to prove it drains properly, then send a short summary of what caused the blockage, with photos if helpful.

A blockage rarely fixes itself, and in a wet hilltop village it can soak walls within a single winter. Ring or message us when you spot:
Acting quickly protects tile-hanging, timber frames and fascia boards from soaking through.
The price depends on what is blocked and how much work is needed to free it. We take into account the number of choked outlets, hoppers and downpipes, any rooted plants, whether guards must be removed and refitted, roof height and access around the property. Outbuildings can be added if their gutters are blocked too. Photograph the overflowing sections and message them to us for a fixed, free quote.
Beech leaves are tough and slow to rot, and the spiky husks and nuts the trees drop in autumn wedge firmly into outlets and downpipe tops. Around Abinger Common, where beech woodland surrounds many houses, that combination causes more stubborn blockages than softer leaves from garden trees.
Yes. Hoppers on older houses are prone to filling with leaves and overflowing. We clear them by hand or vacuum, check the downpipe beneath and make sure water flows straight through again before we leave.
Guards can reduce the volume of leaves entering a gutter, but fine debris and needles still pass through and collect underneath, so they do not remove the need for clearing. If you already have them, we take them off to clear beneath and refit them afterwards.
We clear downpipes from ground level upwards, meaning any water still rising at the gully once we finish points to a jam underground in the drain or soakaway. That needs a drainage specialist with cameras and jetting equipment, and we will explain what we found.
We can remove twigs, leaves and smaller debris from gutters and valleys after a storm. If heavy branches are lying across the roof, a tree surgeon may need to remove them first so we can work safely. We will advise when you send photos.
Not usually. Lots of properties around Abinger Common are reached that way. We plan parking when we quote and carry equipment where needed, taking care not to obstruct neighbours or passing traffic on the lane.
