Home›Gutter Clearing›Row Town
When Row Town gutters overflow, it is nearly always a plug of rotting oak leaves at the outlet. We dig it out, rod the downpipe, pull any seedlings and leave the system draining freely, often within a day of your message.
A blocked gutter tends to announce itself in the worst possible way: a sheet of water dropping past the kitchen window in a storm, or a damp patch spreading on a bedroom wall. At that stage the leaves inside have stopped being leaves. They have packed down into a black, peaty mass, sometimes with seedlings rooted in it, that sits right over the outlet. Gutter clearing in Row Town is about removing that plug and everything behind it, then making sure the downpipe beneath is not hiding a second blockage.
Loose material comes out first with a high-suction vacuum on poles up to 12 metres long. The compacted layer underneath usually needs hand work, so we set up a ladder with stabilisers where it is safe and lift out the sludge with scoops and trowels. Downpipes are tackled from the bottom, with flexible rods and plenty of water, until a full bucket runs straight through. Where mesh or brush guards have been fitted, these are removed, cleaned and fixed back afterwards so they work as intended.

The trees are the main reason. Row Town has plenty of old oaks lining the roads and standing in back gardens, and the hillside towards Ottershaw is well wooded. Oak leaves are thick and waxy and resist breaking down, so a gutter that collects them in November is often still full of them the following summer. By then rain and bird droppings have turned the mass into compost, seeds have germinated and there may be oak saplings or grasses with roots wrapped around the outlet.
Hillside living plays a part too. Strong westerly winds sweep up the slope and deposit leaves from neighbouring gardens and the wooded edges onto roofs that have no tall trees of their own. Houses with dormers or L-shaped layouts have internal corners where those leaves collect, and a valley gutter can fill completely without being visible from the ground. Heavy downpours then overwhelm the corner and water runs behind the fascia rather than over the front.
Downpipes suffer as well. On older houses the swan-neck bends at the top are narrow, and a single clump of leaves can wedge there, backing water up into the gutter. We regularly clear these on homes all around Row Town and the rest of KT15, from Woburn Hill and Ongar Hill to the roads leading down into Addlestone and across to New Haw and Ottershaw.
We clear from the top of the system downwards, so the water has somewhere to go at every stage.
Your photos and a walk round the house tell us where water is escaping. On Row Town homes that is usually a corner, a dormer junction or the outlet nearest the biggest oak.
The vacuum strips off loose leaves, then compacted sludge and rooted plants are scooped out by hand from a stabilised ladder. Nothing is pushed down into the downpipe.
Working from the shoe upwards, we break through lodged debris with rods and water, paying close attention to the swan-neck bends that catch leaves on older properties.
We pour water along each repaired run and watch it drain. Guards go back on, the drive and paths are swept, and photos are sent if you were out.

Gutter clearing is the right call once the system has actually stopped working, rather than just looking a bit full. Book us if you notice:
The sooner a blockage is cleared, the less chance it has to rot the fascia or soak into the brickwork.
Because blockages vary so much, we quote from photos of the actual problem. What tends to affect the figure:
You will have a fixed price before we book in, and nothing extra is added without your agreement.
Corners and dormer junctions are where water slows down and leaves settle. On Row Town homes with oaks nearby, a single corner can fill several times a year. Clearing it properly, including the outlet and downpipe, helps, and if the problem keeps returning we can suggest suitable guards.
Usually, yes. We work up from the bottom with flexible rods and water to break through lodged leaves and debris. If the pipe has a blockage we cannot reach, or the problem is in the drain below ground, we will explain and suggest the right next step.
They can. Even small saplings send roots along the gutter and into joints and outlets, which can push sections apart and cause leaks. We pull them out roots and all, then clear the soil they were growing in, which is common on Row Town roofs.
They can reduce the volume of leaves entering the gutter, but they do not stop silt and they collect a layer on top that still needs removing. Many Row Town customers with guards book us to lift them, clear underneath and refit them every year or two.
Most enquiries get an answer within the day, and storm overflows jump to the front of the diary whenever a gap appears. Sending a photo showing where the water is spilling over lets us price the job and plan the right equipment straight away.
For most Row Town homes, yes. Once a badly blocked system has been cleared, a planned clean every autumn stops the same build-up forming again. Properties surrounded by large oaks may need a spring visit as well.
