Home›Roof Cleaning & Moss Removal›Hinchley Wood
Thick green moss on the north slope, yellow lichen spots on the hips, black algae on the ridge – the roofs of Hinchley Wood collect the lot. We take it off by hand, wash or steam what is left and help keep it from coming straight back.
Ninety-odd years of weather sit on some Hinchley Wood roofs, and others have concrete tiles fitted a few decades back that have since grown a fur coat. Either way, moss traps water against the tile surface, lifts the edges of the courses in frosty weather and, when it finally lets go, tumbles straight into the gutters. Roof cleaning in Hinchley Wood from SuperClean deals with it in a measured way that suits the age and material of your roof rather than blasting it with the highest pressure available.
The bulk of the moss is removed first with made-to-measure tile scrapers that slot between the courses and ease it off without cracking edges. What remains, from algae staining to the fine roots left behind, is tackled with either a low-pressure wash or a steam clean, depending on what the tiles can tolerate. Last of all, an optional biocide spray helps the clean finish last several seasons longer. We always clear the gutters once the moss removal is finished, so none of it ends up clogging your outlets the next time it rains.

The typical Hinchley Wood house has a hipped roof with four sloping faces rather than two. That design is attractive, but it guarantees that at least one face points north and sits in shadow for most of the winter. On those slopes the tiles stay damp for days after rain, and moss grows thick and fast. Many owners notice that the back of the house, or the side facing next door, is green while the front looks fine, simply because of which way it faces.
Roofing materials vary across the area. Some homes keep their original plain clay tiles, which are relatively thin and can chip if treated roughly, so we rely on hand scraping and a gentle wash. Others had their roofs re-covered with interlocking concrete tiles later in the twentieth century; these have a rougher surface that moss loves, and they respond well to steam cleaning once the bulk is off. Bay roofs and porches covered in tiles usually need attention too, as they catch everything rolling off the main roof.
Surrounding trees keep the moisture levels up. Mature oaks, sycamores and birches throughout Hinchley Wood’s gardens shade the slopes and drop leaf litter into the valleys, giving moss spores a perfect place to settle. Homes close to Telegraph Hill and the leafier roads towards Claygate often see the heaviest growth. We clean and treat roofs throughout the KT10 area, including the streets around the station and along both sides of the Kingston bypass.
No two Hinchley Wood roofs get quite the same treatment, but the running order rarely changes.
Looking at your pictures, or the roof itself, we work out whether it is clay or concrete, note any cracked or slipped tiles and choose whether steam or a low-pressure wash is the right finishing method for your roof.
Scrapers cut to the profile of your tiles slide between the courses and peel away the thick growth, working down the slope carefully so the tiles are not cracked and the debris is gathered as we go.
Next comes either steam or a gentle low-pressure rinse, shifting the algae film, lichen and stubborn roots, leaving a much cleaner surface that sheds rain more easily.
Where requested, biocide goes on to hold back regrowth. Every bit of fallen moss is then vacuumed from the gutters, and paths and borders are swept.

A light dusting of green is nothing to panic about. These, though, suggest it is time:
Acting before moss gets thick means the clean is quicker and the tiles are under less strain through the freeze-thaw months.
On many Hinchley Wood semis it is the rear hip and the bay roof that go green first. If you are unsure, a phone photo from an upstairs window of the house opposite or behind is often revealing.
Your quote is built around the roof itself, chiefly:
Photos of every slope, taken from the garden and the street, will let us give you a firm quote.
Bay, porch and garage roofs can all be handled on the same visit as the main slopes.
Handled correctly, no. Clay tiles on older Hinchley Wood houses can be brittle, which is why they get careful scraper work followed by steam or a gentle rinse, never a powerful jet. We check for any loose or broken tiles beforehand and point out anything a roofer should look at.
It almost always comes down to sunlight. The north-facing slopes of hipped roofs here stay shaded and damp, while south-facing slopes dry out quickly. Trees overhanging one side make the difference even greater. We often clean the shaded slopes more thoroughly and may suggest biocide on those sides in particular.
For most shaded KT10 roofs we think so. Sprayed on once the tiles are clean, it knocks back the spores and roots left behind so green growth returns far more slowly. Nothing keeps a roof clear for ever under Surrey oaks, yet a treated slope stays presentable noticeably longer and the follow-up clean is a lighter job.
Only while the scraping is under way. Plenty does drop into the eaves while we work, so once the slopes are done, every gutter run gets vacuumed out and each downpipe is checked, because a roof’s worth of moss left in the eaves would choke the outlets after the first proper shower.
Yes. Tiled bay and porch roofs are a feature of many Hinchley Wood homes and they often collect moss sliding down from the main roof. We include them in the quote if you ask, and they are cleaned using the same careful method as the main slopes.
They suit different roofs. Steam is excellent on tough concrete tiles with stubborn lichen and roots, while a low-pressure wash may be the better choice for fragile or older tiles. We decide based on your roof once we have seen it, and explain why we recommend one approach over the other.
