Home›Gutter Cleaning›Shere
A gentle, thorough clean for the gutters of Shere’s old cottages, farmhouses and family homes beneath the North Downs. Every run emptied, outlets checked, downpipes tested and the lane outside left exactly as we found it.
Shere is one of the prettiest villages in the Surrey Hills, and a lot of that charm sits at roof level: steep clay-tiled slopes, dormers, catslide roofs and gutters that have been patched and extended over generations. Those same features make it easy for leaves, tile grit and moss to settle where nobody can see them. Our gutter cleaning in Shere clears the whole system in one visit, from the front elevation facing the street to the back runs above gardens and outbuildings.
The bulk of each clean happens from the garden, using a powerful commercial vacuum fed up carbon poles that stretch roughly 12 metres skyward, which means delicate old fascias and fragile peg tiles are left untouched. A stubborn hopper or a valley choked with tile grit gets finished by hand, with a ladder set up safely where it will do no harm. We then pour water through each downpipe from its foot upwards, proving that rain is genuinely leaving the roof. If you are out, we can send photographs of the empty gutters once the job is finished.

The village grew up along the Tillingbourne, and many of its houses are timber-framed or brick-and-tile buildings that pre-date modern guttering by a long way. Gutters were often added later, fixed to uneven rafter feet or short fascia boards, so they can have shallow falls and awkward joins. Debris that would wash through a straight modern run tends to lodge in these older systems, which is why a regular clean pays off here more than in a newer estate.
Shere is also surrounded by trees. Beech and yew grow on the chalk slopes of the North Downs to the north, while oak, holly and Scots pine fill the greensand woods running south towards Shere Heath and the Hurtwood. Add the damp air that hangs in the valley along the river, and moss grows readily on north-facing roof slopes before washing down into the gutters as a dark, heavy sludge.
Getting a van and poles into the village takes some planning as well. Middle Street and the lanes around the church are narrow, parking is tight, and the village is busy with walkers and cyclists at weekends. We plan visits around that, keep our kit compact and tidy up as we go. The conservation area status means we take extra care with old cast iron and timber, too. We cover the whole of GU5 around Shere, including Gomshall, Albury and the houses up towards Combe Lane and the Downs.
Here is how a typical clean on a Shere property runs from start to finish.
Pop your address over on WhatsApp, by text or by email, along with snaps showing every side that carries guttering. Roof pitch, height and lane access all go into a fixed figure, normally sent back that day.
On arrival we check the eaves from the ground, note any staining, sagging lengths or blocked hoppers, and confirm with you which runs, porches and outbuildings are included in the clean.
Our vacuum lifts out leaves, moss and silt along every gutter. Corners and choked outlets get a final scoop by hand, our ladder footed well away from soft timber and brittle tiles.
Water goes down each pipe to prove it runs freely. Paths and borders are swept, gates latched, and a quick text confirms we have gone, plus pictures should you want them.

Cottages under the trees around Shere typically need cleaning every year, and some benefit from a second visit in spring. These clues suggest yours is overdue:
On older buildings, water that runs down the wall can soften timber frames and mortar. A routine clean is a small job compared with repairing that kind of damage.
We price each property individually, so the figure you get reflects your house rather than a rough average. What we look at:
Pictures of each elevation over WhatsApp are all we need to put a free, fixed figure together, usually within the day.
Yes. Since the suction hose is guided up from garden level, old tiles, lime mortar and historic timber carry no weight at all. Where hand clearing is needed we place ladders with care. We do not alter or replace anything on an older property without discussing it with you first.
Not usually. We carry compact kit and can work from a short distance away if the van cannot stop right outside. Tell us about any driveway or verge we may borrow and we will arrange the day to suit it.
Late autumn, once the beech and oak leaves have dropped, suits most houses in the valley. Homes right under pines or yews shed debris all year, so a spring clean as well keeps those gutters from refilling before the next winter.
Those runs are tackled entirely from the lawn or patio, so no ladder ever rests on a glazed or plastic roof. The same method works for gutters over garages, porches and single-storey extensions.
Not at all. A clear route round the house and an outside socket for the vacuum are enough. Once we finish we close any gates, let you know the work is done and can send pictures of the cleared gutters.
Yes, every pipe is tested and any blockage is worked loose from its base upwards during the clean. Where water backs up underground, in the drain run beneath your path, we will explain what we found; that part belongs to a drainage firm with camera and jetting kit.
